Clay vs. Wax Hair Products...Which One is Right for You

Posted by on

After centuries of pomade dominating the market of men’s hair products, wax and clay- based styling products are starting to gain popularity. However, many men struggle deciding which product would be better for their hair and give them that effortless look.

In today’s world, wax based products dominate the marketplace. Most products found on shelves in basic department stores are wax-based. Waxes provide a medium hold and shine and are extremely versatile in that they work well for all types and lengths of hair. Most waxes are very affordable and last a long time. According to headandshoulders.com, there are a few things to watch out for when using a wax-based hair product. Because wax is insoluble in water, it takes a deep clean in order to fully remove it. If not removed properly, the product will build up on the scalp and may cause irritation and may make the hair appear greasy. Wax can easily deliver an effortless look and a good wax can last all day. It is a go-to product for an everyday hairstyle.

Clay-based products are the ‘new kids on the block.’ While wax delivers shine and hold, clay is more specialized towards those who want an extreme amount of volume with a more matte and natural finish. Clay is ideal for those who want more body and to enhance the volume in their hair. Men with curly or wavy hair would benefit from clay product’s conditioning and moisturizing aspects and the strong hold that it provides. Clay products are generally higher priced but do tend to last for a long time. According to misterpompadour.com, clay products have the ability to stimulate hair growth and can draw dirt from the hair without removing natural and essential oils. Clay can give a more professional look and appear effortless simultaneously.

The product that you choose depends on the style that you want to achieve and the type of hair you have. It is important to find a product that is high quality and fits with your type of hair. There are many products that are easy to use and can help you achieve everything from an effortless everyday style to a unique night-out look.

  • I was a long time pomade (water-based) user, so wasn’t sure which one to get. I bought both Clay and Wax. I prefer clay, it has a better hold and feels less greasy. It also has a nice shine to it that isn’t too “shiney/greasy” Both are good products, I use the wax on the weekends because I don’t want to throw it away.
